We’ll spend our first night of the cycling tour in an authentic homestay on An Binh Island. The following day brings a journey through Ben Tre province, where you’ll experience its iconic coconut plantations and charming rural villages. Along the way, you’ll pass orchards, bonsai nurseries, and Theravada temples—each adding to the rich cultural tapestry of this beautiful region.

As the adventure continues, we’ll visit Khmer villages en route to Can Tho City, offering a deeper glimpse into local life. Before returning to Ho Chi Minh City, you’ll also have the chance to witness the vibrant and colorful Cai Rang floating market, a true highlight of the Mekong Delta experience.

This unique cycling trip to the Mekong Delta offers you the chance to experience an authentic overnight stay with a local family. You’ll immerse yourself in their daily life, gaining insight into their culture and how they organize everything during your visit. Enjoy delicious home-cooked meals prepared over a traditional wood fire—no modern kitchen required. You’ll even have the opportunity to join your host in preparing dinner and savor the flavors of the dishes you helped create.

Your day begins with an 8:00 am pickup and transfer to the outskirts of My Tho, near the Mekong River. From there, you’ll take a ferry to the islands, just as locals do for their everyday routines. Enjoy a relaxed bike ride through the islands, cycling alongside the river, taking in scenic landscapes, and observing farmers at work in their fields. Since there are no bridges connecting the islands, ferry crossings add to the adventure and fun of the journey.

Around noon, you’ll arrive in Cai Be township, where you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch at a well-known local restaurant. Afterward, continue your exploration with a boat trip along the picturesque waterways. Visit local workshops, then board a sampan and paddle through a peaceful creek on Tan Phong Island. Later, cross the Mekong River by motorboat to Dong Phu.

Travel through a busy man-made canal that serves as a shortcut across the island, where you’ll see a lively mix of small and large boats moving in both directions. Finally, you’ll be warmly welcomed by your host family and check in to your homestay for the night.

Lunch in the local home in Cai Mon. We continue the journey of cycling in Ben Tre where we a vehicle transfer after lunch.

This is a unique ride because the scenery is entirely different from the other days on the trip. The countryside landscapes are so beautiful that you cannot ride fast at all. Tra Vinh is a small town, and it is not a destination for tourists travelling by bus. So it is tranquil at night after 8:30 pm everything seems to be closed and almost sleep. The province is considered the homeland of Khmer. There are numerous Khmer temples not only in the city but also in the rural districts. A special cycle day allows you to learn about cultures, history and explore deeply to traditional villages of Khmer. Stop and visit some thatch houses, experience the ways of Khmer lives and visit some colourful temples on your way to Cau Ke township.

After we have lunch in town, a fantastic bicycling begins after just half an hour of vehicle transfer to Tra On. We continue the afternoon ride with a ferry crossing to Island. Explore beautiful countryside villages across two islands, pedal along canals, rivers, fruit orchards and rice paddy fields. We get on a support vehicle before 5:00 pm for a short transfer to Can Tho to check in the hotel.

On the last day of the tour, board a motorboat to see the lively floating market. There are many wholesale boats hung type of products they want to sell to smaller boats. Smaller boats are local dealers that come to buy from wholesale boats and sell them back to land markets or locally. Locals come every morning to buy and sell just about anything you can imagine – freshly harvested fruit and vegetables, noodle soup, broken rice, and coffee can be offered here.  Another little sampan with the long-tailed engine that are grocery boats and floating houses around you.

After a wander around the market on land, we’ll disembark from the boat and hit the path to explore some of the hidden charms of the Phong Dien countryside (prepare to be amazed again!) We will have lunch before driving back to Ho Chi Minh. Tour Ends!

Just returned from 4 days cycling on the Mekong Delta with Mr Van. Above expectations. The guide was great fun, and looked after us. He knew of all the little paths and tracks with less traffic on them. We were plied with food, water, and the accommodation was good. Mr Van showed us the different plants and trees that were growing, and he constantly bought us fruit to try. The pace was easy but we cycled through an amazing variation of countrysides. Thanks guys for a great experience. 08 - 09 - 10 - 11 April, 2018

Dear Miss Hue,

We want to thank your team at Vietnam Backroads, for a most enjoyable tour in April. Our guide "Buppy" (hope our spelling is right) was really great and our driver Duc. Everything was really good. Thank you for returning our money from the Duxton hotel. We will certainly recommend Vietnam Backroads as a great company to bike with. Maybe we will do another Backroads tour next year. 06 - 10 April 2013

Very good routes, good mix of urban/village area, poor/rich and farming villages.Good activities (crocodile, fish farms, boat rides, markets and floating market) The food on the set menu by the restaurants was very good (restaurant where guide chose menu, less good. Prefer if he translate Vietnamese into English menu, then we choose(even if this means price increase) Bike excellent packing up of tour very good, professional services eg. Baggage handling. Junior guide Dat has very good English - shows great promise 24 - 25 - 26 - 27 - 28 Sep 2013

The roads were fine, the distances were right for us, we would come again another year, and the hotels were all good. The only surprise was the evening meal in Can Tho as we felt we could have had better food from a street stall. That is a very small point on a very good holiday indeed. Please pass on our thanks to Phuc Tran who was an excellent guide and who we would recommend to others, as we would with Vietnam Backroads Bicycle Tours. Softer saddles next time please! Many thanks for organising this for us - it was great. 27 - 28 Feb to 01 - 02 Mar, 2018

I wanted to thank you for arranging the most wonderful bike trip for me and my son, Ian. It was exactly what we had hoped for - beautiful scenery, great food, wonderful people, manageable biking and the best guide ever. It was a very meaningful trip for us, for many reasons, all enhanced by Dat’s wise and spiritual guidance. We were not ready for the trip to end. Thank you also for helping us arrange transportation to the Wild Gibbon Tour, which was quite an adventure. 2014

My girlfriend and I were fortunate enough to take a 3-night, 4 day tour of the Mekong Delta with Vietnam Backroads and had an amazing time. From our first initial enquiry to the moment we were dropped back at our hotel, we were dealt with promptly and professionally. During our trip we cycled from village to village along the Mekong Delta, getting a taste of local provincial life, eating great food and meeting some amazing people along the way. During this trip we experienced a number of different sides of this region, such the fruit growing areas (stopping off to meet the farmers while they worked and sample their goods), the scenic rice fields of the Khmer people and finally the canal districts. Our guide Thang, was an absolute machine, taking care of all meals, providing cycling coaching when needed and by simply making things happen (including when a usual river taxi was unavailable, he arranged for a local coconut farmer into taking us across the river in his stocked coconut boat – which was pretty unique experience). Thang was full of information and always keen to educate us on the Vietnamese way of life and give us every opportunity to experience it – a genuinely great guy and a pleasure to spend our time with. This trip was an absolutely amazing experience – from the incredible scenery each day, the opportunity to experience culture and also experience number of things we thought we never would have (such as buying fruit and coffee from local sellers in the floating markets, watching the sunset from the top of a Mekong river taxi, and eating some pretty exotic food) to the countless kids running out of their village houses to shout and wave “hello” and wave as we rode past – truly unforgettable I can’t recommend Vietnam Backroads highly enough – for my girlfriend and I this was a very different and unique way to see Vietnam, and experience its culture from the very heart of it. We had an amazing time! Thanks Ms. Hue & Thang for an incredible experience. December 9, 2013

Thang is the best guide- very patient, knowledgeable and awesome. The bikes & routes are great. We've learned so many things about Vietnam. We've also done so many firsts ( boat rides , our bikes, eating rice mice, etc). Such an amazing tour. We'll definitely recommend it to friends. We had a wonderful time. December 4th, 2013

If you have a sense of adventure than I would not hesitate to combine interests of sight-seeing with cycling on and off roads. The trip was made more memorable by the knowledgeable guide and friendships formed along the way. I would recommend the tours highly and plan to do another before I head back home. Thanks, goes out to Anh Thang, Anh Van, and Michael guys. Tri Pham party from Australia.

Hi Vietnam Backroads Team,

I wanted to send a note to tell you how much we enjoyed our Mekong Bike Tour. It exceeded our expectations! Our guide, Thang, was excellent. He really made us feel like we were a local. His knowledge and love for Vietnam is apparent, and he shared so much information with us. This was more than a bike trip, it was a cultural trip though the Mekong Delta that happened to be on bikes. Thang quickly found out that we love food and he made sure we tried everything. We have never had such good food on a trip! Thang also arranged stops along the way to learn about Temples, coconut farming, brick making, rice paper production, coconut palm leaf roofs, water hyacinth weaving and so much more. Our driver, Mr. Thao, was also very good. He was prompt and helpful. Thank you so much! 2013

This is his second trip Home-stay was not as I would have hoped unless there is no other option I would have preferred another hotel. Another excellent tour. Will be back for another Ms Katie: I have enjoyed every minute and have been very impressed with all the staff. From when i booked, I always had very quick responses to my emails. Our guide, Nghi was very knowledgeable and did everything. He could make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Thanks you very much! Our driver was excellent too! Mr Luke: Very enjoyable tour, well organized and got to see lots of things we would not otherwise have seen on our trip. 20 - 21 - 22 - 23 Sep 2013

This 4 day cycle tour of the Mekong Delta, with my wife and two teenage daughters, was absolutely sensational. In addition to taking us completely off the normal tourist track, it enabled us to experience the true friendliness and way of life of the local people. However, this could not have been achieved without the support and professionalism of our fantastic guide, Tang - Articulate, informative, good-humoured and practical. Overall, I would not hesitate in recommending this Company's trips to anyone. 18 - 21 July 2013

We had a wonderful time and appreciate you reaching out to us. I loved that the guide tailored the tour to suit our riding ability and also loved the food - Linh was very mindful that I am vegetarian and we had some of the best meals on our holiday with her. The driver of our support van was so lovely and kind - he worked very hard to make sure that our bikes were ready and always had fresh water and clean wipes when we got back to the car. My only feedback for improvement is that it would be good for the guide to carry a basic first aid kit in her bag (antiseptic, bandages etc) and for there to be a more substantial first aid kit in the support van. Thank you again for arranging this part of our trip.

Warm regards Jacqui 01 - 04 January 2025
