Ultimate Mekong Adventure: Saigon to Ca Mau in 7 Days

After a leisurely breakfast, transfer out of town and cycle along quiet paths into Khmer hamlets. Discover Theravada Buddhist culture, visit beautiful pagodas, and meet local monks before continuing through peaceful Vietnamese and Khmer villages. The Tra Vinh countryside offers a charming, rustic landscape with narrow paths winding through endless rice paddies.

Enjoy lunch in Cau Ke, then ride along back roads shaded by fruit orchards. Cross canals by small bridges and ferries, pass Khmer temples and small towns, and continue to Tra On. Take a ferry to an island for a short ride, then another ferry to reach Can Tho.

After an early breakfast, we board a motorized boat on the Can Tho River to visit Cai Rang Floating Market. This is a truly unique experience in the early morning, with boats of all sizes navigating the busy waterways. Larger boats anchor in place while smaller sampans weave between them, searching for the best trading opportunities. 

After disembarking, we begin a morning bicycle ride to Binh Thuy. Along the way, we explore the backwaters of Phong Dien, pass local schools and small riverside markets, and visit the oldest ancient house in Binh Thuy. This historic house was once owned by a wealthy landlord in the 19th century and is one of the finest old houses in the Mekong Delta. Built in 1870, it features a fascinating blend of Asian and colonial architecture. Its exterior reflects French design, while the interior remains distinctly traditional Vietnamese. 

After lunch en route, we continue with a two-hour vehicle transfer to Chau Phu District, a rural area near Chau Doc. In the afternoon, when the weather is cooler, we resume cycling at around 2:30 pm. The ride follows tracks along agricultural canals, offering beautiful views of Sam Mountain and scenes of farmers harvesting rice in the fields. At the end of the day, we transfer to Chau Doc town.

After a hearty breakfast, a short transfer brings you to a peaceful rural hamlet near Sam Mountain. From here, begin your cycling journey toward Tra Su Forest, a renowned bird sanctuary in the Mekong Delta.

Pedal along scenic countryside routes lined with swaying palm trees, traditional Khmer villages, and vibrant Buddhist pagodas. The ride becomes even more delightful as you pass expansive rice paddies and blooming lotus fields, offering a true glimpse into rural life.

Upon arrival at Tra Su Forest, enjoy a relaxing motorboat ride through the flooded forest. This unique ecosystem is home to diverse wildlife and an impressive variety of bird species, including storks, egrets, cormorants, peafowl, and water cocks. To minimize disturbance, you will also take a quiet sampan ride deeper into the forest, gliding through tranquil waterways where birds nest and thrive. If visiting during breeding season, you may even spot baby birds in their nests.

Continue your cycling journey along gentle, rolling backroads toward Ba Chuc village. Here, your guide will share the poignant history of the events that took place in 1978. If time allows, you will visit the memorial dedicated to the local victims.

A shuttle transfer will take you to Ha Tien, a peaceful border town near Cambodia, where you will stay overnight.

We’ll transfer to Ba Hon Market and begin the day cycling along dirt trails through farmlands, heading toward the karst mountains to visit the Mo So Caves. From there, we continue across lush rice fields and along farming canals, riding over gentle hills on small trails before reaching coastal back roads. Along the way, we pass Binh An Market and follow the shoreline.

We’ll visit Hai Son Pagoda and stop to take photos of Hon Phu Tu before enjoying lunch at a cozy local restaurant. In the afternoon, the route follows well-maintained coastal roads, passing fishing villages, rolling hills, and peaceful lakes, all set within the rich ecosystems of mangrove forests. The terrain varies throughout the day, offering a diverse riding experience.

The ride concludes in a quaint town, where a vehicle will transfer you to Rach Gia in the late afternoon.

A vehicle transfer takes you to Rach Soi, where the day’s ride begins through striking coastal wetlands. Cycle past colorful fishing boats and ships, family-run fisheries, and lively riverside villages, with several ferry crossings along the way. You then enter the remote hamlets of Miệt Thứ, where waterways remain the main form of transport and small long-tail boats are a common sight. The route continues through peaceful countryside, passing fish and shrimp farms, rice paddies, and scenes of everyday rural life. 

Along the way, you may see buffalo working in the fields, locals harvesting crops, and small-scale animal farms on the road to U Minh Thuong. Explore the forest by sampan, gliding through lush greenery and water lilies while watching for storks, kingfishers, and other birdlife. Listen to the sounds of birdsong and experience the rich wildlife of this unique wetland forest. The day ends with a one-hour transfer to Ca Mau City.

After leisurely breakfast, your guide and driver take you to Ca Mau airport to board a domestic flight to Ho Chi Minh to catch your international flight home. Vietnam Airlines daily scheduled flights are in the morning and the afternoon.
