Cycling Vietnam to Cambodia to Laos - Hue to Pakse 14 days

We begin our second-day journey to Hoi An with a brief transfer to the outskirts of Hue, where we will immerse ourselves in Vietnam's most breathtaking rural landscapes and charming countryside. Pedaling along winding back roads, we'll  pass through vibrant green paddy fields, picturesque villages, historic cemeteries, and bustling fish farms dotted along serene lagoons.

Our day includes a stop at Vinh Hien, where we'll enjoy a delicious local lunch and have time to explore a traditional market, soaking in the sights, sounds, and flavors of daily life.

After lunch, we continue our ride through the scenic countryside, following an undulating path along the mountainside. We'll ascend and descend the Phuoc Tuong mountain pass, enjoying panoramic views of the shimmering Lang Co lagoon.

For those seeking an extra challenge, there's an option to conquer the iconic Hai Van Mountain Pass, a thrilling climb followed by an exhilarating downhill ride into Da Nang. From there, we'll transfer to the charming town of Hoi An, where our day concludes with well-earned rest.

Take half a day to discover the charm of Hoi An's countryside and immerse yourself in peaceful rural villages. Pedal through scenic landscapes and engage in hands-on experiences that reveal the heart of local traditions.

During this tour, you'll be able to participate in daily activities the locals cherish. Learn the traditional art of making rice paper, craft Vietnamese rice wine, weave mattresses, and master the iconic Hoi An lanterns. Starting from the hotel, we cross the Thu Bon River via a newly constructed bridge, leading us into the heart of the rustic countryside. This journey offers an immersive experience of village life, where time seems to slow down, and traditional ways of living remain unchanged. Along the way, we have the unique opportunity to observe daily farmer activities in unmodernized towns, pass by thatched houses, witness buffaloes grazing in vast rice fields, and cross charming bamboo bridges into remote hamlets.

Our route includes regular stops along rural paths, where we can explore small local markets, visit homes where fishing nets are crafted by hand, and watch villagers alongside their buffaloes preparing the land for rice crops. The idyllic scenery unfolds along well-maintained pathways leading to the serene Truong Giang River.

There is so much to see and appreciate: traditional ox carts, bustling rural farms, and the operation of simple unhusking rice mills. We observe how locals skillfully use age-old agricultural tools and efficiently store unhusked rice and grains for long-term preservation.
After a delightful lunch, we continue cycling along sandy paths leading to Tam Hai Island. The route takes us through peaceful countryside landscapes, occasionally tracing the river's edge and passing through tiny fishing hamlets dotted with sampan boats. Each turn reveals unspoiled villages that embody tranquility and authenticity.

We then ride along a small river, following a minor road towards the sea mouth, where we board a ferry to Tam Hai Island. After exploring, we take a second ferry back to the mainland and continue our journey through more rustic villages, experiencing the vibrant local life as we head towards Binh Son District.

We begin today's journey from the hotel, quickly leaving behind the small town of Binh Son. Our route takes us along a charming country road that winds through fertile lands, leading to a scenic riverbank. Here, you'll witness traditional bamboo basket boats gently floating on the water and salt fish farms scattered along the vibrant fishing villages.

Continuing our ride, we pedal through rustic villages to My Lai. Upon arrival, we'll visit the historic My Lai Memorial, a poignant site commemorating a significant chapter in history. After reflecting at the memorial, we'll enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant.

After lunch, we cross the river via a modern bridge, entering a picturesque landscape of lush farmlands and tranquil countryside. As we cycle, you'll have the chance to experience the local culture firsthand, observing farmers diligently harvesting their rice crops and passing through peaceful towns rich with charm.

Our journey includes a stop at a traditional pagoda, offering a glimpse into local spiritual life. Next, we'll enjoy a leisurely ferry crossing, followed by a ride through salt fields and past serene, sleepy beaches—perfect opportunities for photography enthusiasts.

Before concluding our ride, we'll visit My A fishing port, where colorful fishing boats create a vibrant scene against the coastal backdrop. Finally, we'll hop onto our support vehicle for a comfortable transfer along Highway 1A, arriving at Sa Huynh Resort, where you can relax and unwind after a day filled with exploration and cultural immersion.

After an energizing breakfast, we'll quickly transfer out of the city and hop back on our bikes. Pedal along smooth paths that wind through picturesque fish farms, serene lakes, and vibrant rice paddy fields. Along the way, immerse yourself in the charm of Cham villages, cross rivers, and admire the rolling hillsides while witnessing the daily lives of Vietnamese and Cham people.

Take a break from cycling to explore the ancient Banh It Cham Temple (Yang M'Tian) and the Duong Long Cham Temple. These majestic Cham towers stand as a testament to the Kingdom of Champa's rich cultural heritage—a civilization shaped by maritime expertise and resilience against centuries of invasions.

The adventure continues as we cycle towards the Quang Trung Museum, where you'll gain insight into Vietnam's heroic history. After the museum visit, we'll transfer to a nearby small town to savor a delicious local lunch.

For those craving an extra challenge, gear up for the ascent of the An Khe Pass—a 9-kilometer climb rising about 800 meters. The thrilling descent on the other side will lead us to the next town, where our final 2.5-hour transfer will bring us to Pleiku.

On our final day in Vietnam, we'll set aside our bikes for a well-earned rest. After breakfast, we'l embark on a 2.5-hour shuttle transfer to the Le Thanh Border Crossing. Upon arrival, we'll smoothly handle custom formalities before meeting our Cambodian team on the other side of the Oyadav border.

From here, your Cambodian adventure begins! The journey continues with a gentle climb, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes, followed by a rewarding descent into Banlung, our destination for the day.

We'll spend the night at the Terres Rouges Lodge, a beautifully restored Khmer-style house. This elegant retreat blends traditional architecture with a serene waterfront location, offering a tranquil escape after days of cycling and exploration. The rest of the day is yours to relax by the hotel's pool, soak in the peaceful ambiance, and savor the start of your Cambodian adventure.

The day commences with a ride toward Stung Treng City by the Mekong River, cycling on road 78, a tarmac road that winds through picturesque rural Ratanakiri. The road offers breathtaking views of rice paddies, rubber tree plantations, and charming small communities, immersing us in the simplicity and beauty of local life.

We stop at local houses, vibrant markets, and tiny towns on the way. Sometimes, we break under the shade of lush green plantations lining the road, where you can savor the refreshing atmosphere and observe the rhythms of daily life in the region. These stops allow us to appreciate the authentic charm of Cambodia's countryside.

Today's ride is both long and challenging, but it's entirely flexible. You can opt to continue cycling or take a break in the support vehicle at any point, ensuring your comfort and enjoyment throughout the day. We end the day by transferring to Stung Treng, where we settle into our hotel. In the evening, enjoy a delicious dinner at Stung Treng Resort.

We begin our day with an exciting ride from the Terres Rouges Lodge, navigating a mix of diverse terrains along the scenic Mekong River. The route takes us through charming hamlets, expansive fields, and the Koh Han Community-Based Ecotourism area—a hidden gem in a unique riverside landscape perfect for nature lovers.

Our morning ride covers approximately 25 km, concluding where the cycling route reconnects with Road 7. From here, a shuttle transfer (about one hour) will take us to the Nong Nok Khiene Border Crossing into Laos. Before continuing, we'll pause to enjoy a delightful lunch, soaking in the peaceful riverside atmosphere.

In the afternoon, we switch gears for a short cycling stretch towards the river, where a ferry awaits us to Don Khon Island—one of Laos's famed Four Thousand Islands (Si Phan Don). Upon arrival, we'll embark on a leisurely ride around Don Khon Island, exploring its charming trails, picturesque landscapes, and vibrant local life. Our day ends at a riverside hotel on Don Khon Island, nestled along the tranquil waters of the majestic Mekong River.

A relic of French colonial ambition, the Death Railway was built during the late 19th and early 20th centuries to bypass the impassable rapids of the Mekong River. Today, you can visit the Locomotive Museum, which showcases the remnants of this ambitious yet challenging engineering project.

Walking along the old tracks and observing the rusty locomotives is like stepping back in time. You'll witness the raw power of Li Phi Waterfalls, also known as the Spirit Trap. These cascading falls are a spectacular natural sight and cultural significance for locals, who believe the waters trap bad spirits. The roaring water and misty air create a mesmerizing scene perfect for photos or simply soaking in nature's beauty.

After exploring the island's major highlights, hop on a bicycle and cycle along Don Khon's charming dirt paths. This leisurely ride will take you past traditional stilted houses, lush rice paddies, and friendly locals going about their day.

In the morning, we’ll immerse ourselves in local life while exploring three enchanting islands, Don Det, Don Som, and Don Khong, for 25km using traditional local ferry crossings. After soaking in the vibrant culture and serene landscapes, we'll savor a delicious lunch at a local eatery.

Our adventure then continues on the mainland, cruising along smooth tarmac roads and embracing the nostalgic charm of colonial Champasak. In the afternoon, covering approximately 25 kilometers, we then enjoy a relaxing shuttle transfer to Champasak in the late afternoon.

After a leisurely breakfast, we'll travel by shuttle to the awe-inspiring Vat Phou. Wat Phou is an ancient Khmer Hindu temple complex located in southern Laos, at the base of Mount Phou Kao in Champasak Province. It is one of the most important archaeological and cultural sites in Laos and has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Spend an hour exploring the complex's remarkable sites, including the museum and Prasat Hong Nang Sida. Take in the intricate carvings, historic structures, and the serene atmosphere of this sacred place.

After our visit, we continue our final day's ride to Pakse. The first section takes us cycling along a dirt rural road, offering stunning views of farmland scenery and mountain landscapes. Along the way, we'll pass through charming little villages, where you can catch glimpses of local life. The route then follows the majestic Mekong River, guiding us to our final destination in Pakse City.

After breakfast the following morning, a van takes you to the airport. The tour ends.
