The Vietnam Central Coast Adventure is a captivating journey through some of the country’s most iconic cultural landmarks and breathtaking coastal landscapes. From the imperial monuments of Hue to the lantern-lit charm of Hoi An — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and the tranquil shores of Whale Island, this adventure offers an outstanding exploration of Vietnam’s rich heritage and natural beauty.

The journey begins in Hue, the former capital of the Nguyen Dynasty, where history and tradition come vividly to life. From here, the cycling adventure unfolds along scenic countryside roads, leading to the legendary Hai Van Pass. This rewarding climb reveals spectacular views of emerald rice paddies, eucalyptus forests, and the dramatic coastline below.

Riding along quiet back roads and through peaceful rural villages, you’ll experience the authentic rhythm of central Vietnam. The serenity of the countryside contrasts deeply with the poignant visit to My Lai, the site of one of the darkest chapters of the Vietnam War. Blending history, culture, and exceptional cycling, this an amazing adventure concludes with well-earned relaxation at the idyllic Whale Island Resort.

Our adventure begins in Hue, accessible by flights from Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. Please inform us of your flight, train, and arrival details so Vietnam Backroads can arrange your pick-up on time. We can also arrange domestic flights from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, or international flights to Da Nang with transfers to Hue.

If you arrive on the trip departure day or the day before, enjoy a full day exploring Hue’s historic sites and countryside by bicycle. After meeting you, we begin with a walking tour through the heritage quarter, visiting the historic Hien Nhan Gate and the majestic Forbidden Citadel. A short shuttle transfer then takes us along the Perfume River to the iconic Thien Mu Pagoda, followed by a visit to the elegant An Hien Garden House, a beautifully preserved traditional residence dating from 1895. Take a Hue’ style meal at one of the best restaurants in town.

In the afternoon, we’ll continue pedaling through peaceful countryside and riverside landscapes, stopping at local family workshops to experience traditional crafts. Ride toward Vong Canh Hills and the ornate Khai Dinh Tomb before enjoying lunch at a local restaurant. We cross the floating bridge, continue cycling along the scenic Trach River to the Gia Long Tomb. After the visit, we return to Hue by support vehicle.

Pedal beside vibrant lagoons, passing tiny thatched houses and simple shelters lining the water’s edge, before continuing toward the shoreline and quiet pathways leading to Tu Hien. Here, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch in a small local town.

In the afternoon, the ride becomes more challenging as we cycle through rolling hills and mountain scenery alongside the picturesque Cau Hai Lagoon. We’ll climb over Phuoc Tuong Pass before descending and undulating toward Lang Co Beach. From there, riders can choose to tackle the legendary Hai Van Pass — with 12 km of climbing followed by 11 km of descent — or take the support vehicle to the summit viewpoint overlooking one of Vietnam’s most spectacular coastlines. Today, one of the island’s greatest attractions is its pristine and largely uninhabited nature, apart from the small resort, making it a true sanctuary for diverse wildlife and natural beauty: colorful flowers, exotic birds, shimmering schools of fish, and, if we are lucky, even whales and whale sharks.

Whale Island Resort is located along the sandy white beach of stunning Van Phong Bay, well known for its diving and private sandy beaches. It's about 80km north of Nha Trang. It is fantastic to enjoy swimming, snorkelling, and diving. The most secluded beach with tropical landscapes to relax. Spend the whole day on beach.
