Leave behind the energy of Ho Chi Minh City and venture into the peaceful heart of the Mekong Delta on this immersive 3-day, 2-night cycling journey. Created for travelers who value meaningful experiences, this adventure highlights authentic culture, genuine local connections, and the serene beauty of the countryside.

Rather than focusing on crowded tourist stops, the tour takes you along quiet village roads, lush orchards, riverside paths, and traditional communities, offering a deeper and more personal view of life in the Delta. From Cai Be and Vinh Long to Can Tho, each day brings opportunities to connect with local people, discover regional traditions, and experience the landscape at a relaxed, rewarding pace.

This is more than just a cycling trip — it is a cultural journey through one of Vietnam’s most fascinating regions.

We meet at 8:00 AM and depart by shuttle to the Mekong Delta, arriving in Tam Binh, My Tho around 9:30 AM. From there, we begin our cycling journey, crossing the river by ferry to Ngu Hiep Island.

Continuing our exploration, we take another ferry to Tan Phong Island—often known as Durian Island—where you’ll gain insight into the daily life of local residents. We then cycle through peaceful countryside paths to reach a riverside homestay, where you’ll stay overnight.

A freshly prepared local lunch will be served upon arrival, followed by time to relax until 2:30 PM. In the afternoon, we hop back on our bikes and ride approximately 3 km through lush orchards and along small waterways. Along the way, you’ll enjoy a sampan boat ride, offering a close-up experience of the Mekong Delta’s natural beauty, flavors, and scents. We return to the homestay by bicycle, taking different scenic routes to further explore the surrounding area. Spend the rest of the day by swimming pools.

An hour sampan boat rowing in the afternoon.

Sip tea or coffee and enjoy breakfast while watching cargo boats and local ferries glide across the Upper River. After checking out, get ready for an exciting day ahead.

We cycle to the dock and join locals on a ferry to Cai Be town, where we visit small family-run workshops producing traditional snacks and handicrafts. Along the way, we'll stop and see the Cai Be floating market. From there, we continue biking to explore ancient houses and take a break to enjoy a glass of cà phê sữa đá—Vietnamese iced coffee.

Next, we ride toward the riverside and take another ferry across the Mekong River to Dong Phu. Here, we explore An Binh Island, weaving through narrow waterways and the bustling Dong Phu canals. We continue cycling across the island before boarding a ferry to Vinh Long town.

Upon arrival, we enjoy a delicious lunch at a riverside restaurant. Afterward, you’ll have free time to stroll through the city’s largest fruit market. A short 30-minute transfer then takes us to Tan Phu village in Tam Binh District for the afternoon ride.

We cycle deep into Khmer villages, visiting one of the most beautiful Khmer temples and a local home to experience daily life in the community. The route follows small concrete paths, some tracing quiet rivers and others cutting through expansive farmland and rice fields. As we continue, take in the distinctive landscapes of Khmer culture before reaching the outskirts of Binh Minh, where a vehicle transfer brings us to Can Tho city.

We loved our trip. The tour ended up being just my husband and me with a guide - Viet- and driver. The riding was scenic and included lots of short ferry trips. Overall the riding was very enjoyable. There were a few places where the pathway was too narrow for us to ride comfortably, and Viet was good about rerouting where necessary to make the ride as pleasant as possible. Our first night at Ut Trinh homestay was wonderful--great food, and our private bathroom was outdoors, which we loved. Also we got to help cook, which was really fun. On the road, children often ran alongside us shouting hello, which we also loved. I highly recommend this trip. 24 - 25 - 26 Jan 2019

Met my expectations very well. A great guide - Loc Ly and good quality bikes. He knew what we could do and took us on very interesting tracks and showed us charming villages. We were looked after very well on the whole trip. We loved this and pleased with Vietnam Backroads. We would definitely recommend this company to our friends. 21 - 22 - 23 April 2019

We had a wonderful trip. Mr Dung was an excellent tour guide who was very informative, knowledgeable, organised and also kind and funny. He really made the tour a stand - out experience for us and it is a highlight of our 4 week holiday to Cambodia + Vietnam. Mr Lok is a very good driver and got us from Saigon to Can Tho and back with no problems. He was always on time with many cold bottles of water ready. We loved the homestay on An Binh + all the food stops combination with Kieu before the trip was great. One comment would be and it would be wonderful if you could make payment by Paypal or Stripe for the tour. 27 - 28 - 29 December 2019

We did a 3 day 2 night tour of the Mekong. It ended up just being myself and my wife for the tour but our guide Dung was wonderful and it felt like we had another friend with us on the tour. The cycle tour itself was just perfect - about 20-30km per day of easy cycling on flat ground through lovely scenery. You can tailor this as required depending on fitness levels. It was a great way to see the more rural way of life in Vietnam. The home stay was excellent and included a cooking class which was good fun! Dung brought us for lunch and dinner every day and the food was wonderful! Our driver Mr. Loc was excellent also and navigated without an issue. Thanks for a great tour! 27 - 28 - 29 December 2019

We had a fantastic tour. We use an expression - "save the best for last". Our bike tour was at the end of our visit to Viet Nam. It was truly the highlight! As for the "mechanics" of the trip: 1. Everything on the itinerary was as we expected; Timing, hotels, meals. 2. The bicycles were excellent. The gearing and fit were good. The shock absorber was nice on the occasional bumps. Most important - they were easy to ride. Minimal strain to get going and keep going. Gears dropped down well for the bridges. Cruised nicely on the flat stretches. 3. Hoang was amazing. He "read" how we were doing and adapted to our abilities. We felt like little children pedaling for fun while we followed him. He was very good at showing us the various temples along the way and explaining the differences. His English was very very good - which enhanced everything; Food in the restaurants, agricultural terms, and more. Some of the most special aspects of our trip were the local people. Hoang struck up conversations and people showed us their handicrafts and industry. So we met people weaving water hyacinths for export, a family growing bean sprouts, and a man harvesting leftover rice for his chickens. We were even invited to a wedding that we cycled by! Another favorite memory was pulling into the temple complex before we got to Can Tho. (Near Dong Binh). I have attached a photo that shows how beautiful this appeared from my bike. On a scale of 1 to 10, we would rate this trip a 12! and if it is even possible, Hoang's contribution would be even higher! Let us provide an example: On the 2nd day as we pulled into the Victoria Hotel and Hoang said he would get us for dinner at 7:30PM we said 'we were too full to eat an entire meal; what about a simple Banh Mi?' He was a bit surprised by our request, but said he knew the best Banh Mi in town ..... and later on brought it to us at our hotel. It was delicious and we were very appreciative of his caring and professionalism. The driver Hi? was very nice and professional. Seemed to work well with Hoang. We will post a version of the above on TripAdvisor. We would also like to give Feedback only to you about the hotels and restaurants. The first lunch at the Mekong Rest Area was very good. Enjoyed it. Mekong River Boutique resort had a lovely pool. Dinner was excellent. The staff helpful. The manager went out of his way to welcome us On the negative side - the beds were uncomfortable and there was insufficient hot water for our shower. We will tell this to you, but never post this publicly. We understand that there are limited lodging choices in small towns. The Victoria was wonderful. Great pools, perfect rooms, good breakfast. Cannot complain. The boat trip to the floating market in the morning was easy. We appreciated that the boat driver took us right to a dock at the market for our last drive. We very much appreciate the service and detail you provided us to make sure this was a trip we will always remember. When we return to Viet Nam we would love to bike with Hoang and you again! Meredith and Ken. 27 - 28/02 - 01/03/2023

We did the 3-day Mekong delta cycling tour with our family (2 adults, 2 boys of 11 and 12 years old). Our guide was Dat. We had a super trip. Cycling was great, bikes excellent and Dat was the best guide we had in Vietnam. I highly recommend the 3-day cycling trip in the Mekong Delta by Vietnam Backroads/Vietnam cycling tours!! 26-27-28 July 2022
