Step into Vietnam’s most powerful chapter of history on an unforgettable journey through the legendary battlefields of Quang Tri and the iconic DMZ. Trace the echoes of the past along the former Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone, where stories of resilience and courage still linger in the landscape.

Venture deeper into history as you follow sections of the famed Ho Chi Minh Trail, once a lifeline through dense jungles and rugged mountains. Explore the atmospheric Ta Con Airbase, a former combat base that now stands as a haunting reminder of wartime intensity. For active travelers, the adventure continues on two wheels—cycling along the scenic Laos border toward A Luoi, where dramatic mountain views and ethnic minority villages create a truly authentic experience.

The journey softens into elegance as you head toward imperial lands, culminating in a visit to one of the most impressive mausoleums of the Nguyen Dynasty—a masterpiece of royal architecture and serene beauty. Your adventure concludes in the timeless city of Hue, where history, culture, and charm come together to create the perfect finale to an extraordinary exploration.

Set out from Hue at 8:00 am with a short scenic transfer to the coastline for a day of adventure. The first 9 km follows dirt trails alongside the Tam Giang Lagoon, with views dotted with tiny fishing boats, shelters, and fish farms surrounded by bamboo. Soak in the sweeping peninsula scenery as you pass small markets selling fresh fish along the way. We then cycle toward the coastline and ride along sandy coastal paths through charming hamlets of thatched houses, ornate temples, seafood farms, and sand dunes. The morning ride covers approximately 36 km, after which we transfer for one hour along a beautiful coastal road to Cua Tung Beach, where a delicious seafood lunch awaits.

Following lunch, we explore the Vinh Moc Tunnels. As the temperature cools, we hop back on our bikes and continue on the coast to Cua Tung. We then follow a path through gorgeous rice fields to the Ben Hai River, continuing onward to Hien Luong Bridge—once the symbolic divide along the 17th parallel between North and South Vietnam from 1954 to 1975. Visit the Hien Luong Museum and take a reflective walk across the bridge to the other side of the river, soaking in its powerful history. Conclude the day with a short transfer to Dong Ha City, check in to your hotel, and unwind with a well-earned dinner in town.

We begin today’s journey with a meaningful visit to the Quang Tri Museum. The museum displays large-scale military hardware, including decommissioned tanks, airplanes, and artillery. It also showcases artifacts from prehistoric eras and the Champa culture. After a guided tour of the museum, we’ll take a shuttle out of the city and begin cycling toward Khe Sanh.

We’ll venture through remote villages, forested jungles, serene lakes, rice paddy fields, and tiny towns. Along the way, we’ll stop at local farms to taste fresh pomelo, jackfruit, and other seasonal fruits while enjoying captivating scenery and gentle mountain views. We’ll also visit an ancient mountain military base from the Nguyen Dynasty before ending today’s bike ride on the Ho Chi Minh Trail (now a modern highway). Savor lunch at small town on the way.

Afterward, we’ll board the support vehicle for a one-hour drive to Ta Con Air Base, now open to visitors as a fascinating museum. Here, you’ll discover an impressive collection of wartime relics, including aircraft, transport vehicles, tanks, helicopters, and artillery—powerful reminders of the region’s past. Following the visit, we’ll transfer to the hotel.

We begin the day with a scenic 30-minute transfer to the historic Dak Rong Bridge, an enduring symbol of friendship constructed by Cuban engineers during the war era. After unloading the bikes, we set off along the legendary western branch of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, pedaling through the remote borderlands that trace the frontier of Laos toward A Luoi.

Today’s ride follows the smooth stretches of QL14, winding through rolling hills, tranquil rivers, lush valleys, and traditional ethnic minority villages. One of the highlights is cycling 15 km on the original Ho Chi Minh Trail itself — once a vital wartime supply route, now transformed into a peaceful and picturesque back road rich in history and atmosphere.

As the old trail merges once again with the modern highway, we tackle the scenic Pe Ke Mountain Pass. The climb gains +688 m of elevation with a manageable 4% gradient, rewarding us with sweeping mountain vistas before a thrilling descent into the quiet township of A Luoi.

On our final day, we depart from the hotel and transfer by shuttle for one hour to Binh Dien Village, where our last ride takes us off-road through charming villages and scenic countryside. The route unfolds along winding backroads, leading us through lush jungle landscapes, remote ethnic minority villages, and occasional riverside trails that reveal the region’s untouched beauty.

Along the way, we pause to visit the serene and elegant Minh Mang Mausoleum, cross the Huong River via a floating bridge, and continue cycling toward Khai Dinh Mausoleum. After a relaxing lunch, we ride deeper into the charming countryside of Hue, where the scenery softens into peaceful rural life. We pass traditional mandarin houses and centuries-old pagodas hidden along quiet lanes, eventually cycling beside stretches of the poetic Perfume River.

Our journey gently concludes as we roll into the historic city of Hue, enriched by a day filled with culture, nature, and discovery.

Hi Ms Tam,

Well we have just had the best few days with Mr Ky and Mr Vu! They looked after us superbly for the whole time, always making sure our bikes were working, we had food, water, cold snacks and towels after the rides and also gave us an amazing overview of the areas we were travelling in and the history both recent and more ancient in the areas we were in. We also ate some fantastic new foods with them and could not have had a better time or a better pair of people looking after us! The scenery we saw when riding was incredible and we cannot recommend this tour enough. Please let me know if you have any preferred sites where we can leave a review of the company, tour we completed and also of how wonderful Mr Ky and Mr Vu are to spend time with! 11-14 December 2023

Thank you again

We have come back from the most amazing four days with Mr Ky and Mr Vu! We did the DMZ tour, visiting many historical sites and learning a lot about the history of Vietnam through the years. The cycling each day was incredible, lots of variety (some days we rode flat rides where we could admire the scenery and see the country life in Quang Tri and the Hue suburbs, one day the riding was intense as we rode the Ho Chi Minh trail but the views along the way were certainly worth the effort!). It was a pleasure to be on the tour with Ky and Vu - the planning each day was meticulous and lots of thought from them both went into making sure we got the most out of each day. We had a great time riding, trekking and touring museums with Mr Ky, and at every stop Mr Vu was ready and waiting with snacks, cold drinks, towels and everything that we needed. We also enjoyed the local food and Mr Ky helped us to try some foods we wouldn't have known to order but were amazing! We cannot recommend doing this tour enough (and many other tours are available with this company if the DMZ itinerary doesn't suit) and if either or both of Ky and Vu are your guide or driver for your trip I can assure you you will be in very safe hands and well looked after! We will look to do more tours with VCT when we next return to Vietnam! 11 - 14 December 2023
