Vietnam Backroads was the first company to design tailor-made cycling tours that explore the Mekong Delta’s pristine wetlands, known as Dong Thap Muoi. These journeys take you through Cai Be, the scenic Xeo Quyt forest, and the vibrant Cai Rang floating market. Each year, from September to late October, the region enters its annual flood season. During this time, most farmers pause rice cultivation, while only areas protected by advanced dam systems continue farming to manage water levels and sustain local livelihoods.

Day
1:
Saigon- Xeo Quyt forest- Cao Lanh
19 - 45 km
Xeo Quyt Forest has an area of 52-hectare near My Hiep village. The vast swamp full of tall cajeput trees. Cajeput tree is a common name used for a specific tree classification with a white spongy bark that easily flakes off the trunk. Viet Cong built its base inside the forest in 1960 with bunkers, meeting rooms, command headquarter, etc. The forest is the home to many fresh fish and serval birds and storks. The Xeo Quyt is the ecological site and offers rowed sampan to visit historical relics, admire the scenery, and learn about the touch life in Vietnam War.
After you are met and picked up at your hotel, a one-and-a-half-hour drive will take you to Ngu Hiep, Cai Lay for today’s adventure. We will begin with a ferry crossing to Ngu Hiep Island.
Our bike guide will lead you in exploring local life on the island. Ride through durian,
longan, and grapefruit orchards, passing local markets and small villages along the way, before reaching the second ferry that will take us to Tan Phong Island. While waiting for the ferry, our team will serve you cold water and soft drinks.
Tan Phong Island is a quiet, lush green island with a variety of fruits and orchards. Take a public ferry to Cai Be township, where you can view the lively waterways and admire the old Catholic church. Then, ride to Ba Duc Ancient House, where your bike guide will explain the former landlord’s residence, its traditional culture, and its history.
We will then get back on the bikes and ride along smooth paths beside a winding river to Thong Luu Bridge, where we will transfer for 40 minutes to Xeo Quyt Forest. Enjoy a delicious local lunch before exploring Viet Cong bunkers that were once used during the war, followed by a sampan boat ride through the forest.
We will then resume cycling along scenic paths, sometimes beside the river, to Cao Lanh City

2:
Cao Lanh- Sadec- Can Tho
25 - 45 km
Get some carbohydrates and local dishes, then begin today’s ride from the homestay. We cycle along a narrow lane that takes us to the outskirts. It’s a great time to explore rural riverside villages in the morning—riding through mango orchards and passing small roadside markets that spring up early at corners and junctions, where locals gather and trade.
We take a ferry across the Mekong River, then continue cycling along shady paths through rustic villages, enjoying the diverse scenery of the countryside. Stop at a famous flower village in Sa Dec, where you can enjoy a coffee, take a walk around, experience how the finest flowers are grown, and learn more about a variety of beautiful plants.
Afterward, we ride into Sa Dec, a small riverside town. Break for lunch at a quaint house that once belonged to Mr. Huynh Thuy Le, the lover of Marguerite Duras. Marguerite Duras, a French novelist, was the daughter of a French family living in Sa Dec, where her mother ran a school. She fell in love with Mr. Huynh Thuy Le between 1928 and 1932. Their love story was later adapted into the film The Lover.
Sa Dec is one of the last remnants of old Indochina in Vietnam, still displaying its French architectural heritage in villas built along the canal. Visit a colorful local market before enjoying a leisurely afternoon ride, cycling slowly and taking in the scenery. We pass through villages with rice powder production and sweet potato plantations. Finally, transfer by vehicle to Can Tho City. Check in to the hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

3:
Can Tho- Vinh Long- Saigon
25 km
After leisurely breakfast, enjoy a motorised boat trip to the busiest floating market. Hundreds of boats gather to trade agricultural products, which are from other provinces in the delta. After breakfast, take a 40-minute boat trip from Ninh Kieu Pier to Cai Rang. Watch hundreds of small boats exchange farm products, from boat to boat. The boat will get through the floating market slowly, so all things on your sight. Every boat has a long upright pole at its bow on which samples of the goods for sale hung on the bamboo sticks with bananas, pineapple, sweet potatoes, watermelons and so on.
Disembark your boat for a short transfer to the other side of Hau Giang River to Binh Minh for a half-day ride. We cycle through the vast rice paddy fields, explore the Khmer villages, and stop visiting some colourful Khmer temples, and the small workshop produces hats, handbags, indoor sandals, and bins, all made from water hyacinths. We end up the ride in Tam Binh, lunch en-route before returning to Saigon by vehicle. Tour End!
We chose the 3D/2N tour of Cao Lanh - Sa Dec - Can Tho tour of the Mekong delta. It was 115km fabulous. We ended up in a private tour for the 3 of us, our guide Hoang was excellent, very professional, super nice and very informative. He and our driver Mr. Kiet, took really good care of us. Hoang showed us part of the southern Vietnamese culture, explained what we saw, introduced us to local fruits and food, showed us a rice mill, some temples, a war bunker in a cajuput forest, markets and more. The bikes were very good, the cycling very easy and we didn't see one tourist during our 3 biking day in the country land - only in the hotels where we stayed, at lunch time and in the floating market at Can Tho. We rode on small paths beside canals, in the villages, in the peoples backyards and between fields. Everywhere the kids gave us a big "hello" when we passed by their houses. The price for the tour is on the expensive side for Vietnamese standards, but it was worth every penny and very very well organized and coordinated. I highly recommend this bike tour company and this particular tour if you want to be out of the regular touristic path. 05 - 07 December 2025
Hello, We had a wonderful time and our guide, Hoang, was excellent! Our driver, Mr. Kiet was also very nice and a good driver. Everything surpassed our expectations. I will write a very positive review. Just tell me where to write it. 05 - 07 December 2025 Thank you,
I had a really good time by bicycling for 3 days with Vietnam Backroads. I enjoyed watching people living in villages and greeting them, especially kids.... It would be nice if we could choose the food for breakfast, lunch, dinner with our guide and have them with him. I wanted to eat breakfast and dinner at local restaurants, markets, not in hotels. Thank you so much for your wonderful guide and I appreciated everything. A-ri-ga-to. Sep 16, 2014
Dat- the guide and Toan- the driver were fantastic! They really made us enjoy our time. Dat was incredibly knowledgeable and took great care of us. The only problem was the trip went too fast! Thank you for the trip of life time. We won't forget this experience any time soon. Jeremy_ May 1, 2014

Enjoyed Viet answering our questions. He was very informative + friendly – a good guide! Viet took us on a variety of experience – some were not usual tourist places- like the coconut factory. The routes were very varied on many surfaces lots of villages- Viet made sure we were following him. Lots of varied experience ferry crossings, local food places, etc… Loc was very safe driver and friendly too. We liked the high quality mtb 27.5 bikes, the Rock Shox really made a difference! 19 - 20 - 21 January 2019
Tha and Mr Phuong were very friendly, helpful, patient and alternative. Bike were axcellent especially basket would be even better with a bell. The bike ride/paths were fantastic for a future ride we would be interesting in options for smaller, family- accommodation including in villages ( rather highhotels) It would be great to see your company making efforts to reduce single-use plastic, big water tank/ bottles on bus and provide re-fillable bottles or encourage BYO bottle. It was great that Tha was fexible in break.meals options when we shoews interest in small local options. Completed by Sarah, Libby & Jane. 15 - 16 - 17 Mar 2019
