1:
Ho Chi Minh- Vung Liem
25 - 45 km
Today, we leave Ho Chi Minh City behind and transfer to the outskirts for a rewarding morning ride to My Tho. Cycling along narrow country roads and peaceful village lanes, we escape the bustle of the city and immerse ourselves in the tranquility of the Mekong Delta countryside. The route winds through scenic landscapes shaded by betel palms in Tan Tru, past emerald rice paddies, and alongside plantations of watermelon, dragon fruit, and fresh green vegetables. Before enjoying a delicious local lunch in town, we visit the beautiful Vinh Trang Pagoda.
In the afternoon, the adventure continues from the outskirts of Mo Cay, where we settle into the gentle rhythm of rural Vietnamese life. Riding along rustic paths beside narrow waterways, we pass through a serene landscape of coconut groves, small hamlets, and a maze of canals and rivers. Along the way, we cross several small bridges and enjoy two local ferry rides, adding to the authentic charm of the journey. The day concludes with a one-hour transfer to our hotel.

We set out on an exciting day to discover the natural beauty and rich Khmer heritage of the region. Our ride begins with a short pedal to the stunning Ba Om Pond and its ancient pagoda, an 800-year-old masterpiece of Khmer Theravada Buddhist architecture. Continuing along scenic countryside roads, we pass numerous Khmer pagodas and cycle through endless rice paddies framed by towering coconut palms stretching across the horizon. Along the way, we stop to visit a traditional rice husking mill, where rice is carefully separated from its husk using local processing methods.
After a late lunch in small town, we transfer for approximately 1.5 hours to Can Tho, the vibrant capital city of the Mekong Delta. Here, you’ll have time to enjoy swimming the rest of today, and explore the city at your own pace in the evening, wander through the lively night markets, where you can immerse yourself in the local culture, colorful atmosphere, and delicious regional cuisine.

4:
Tran De- Con Dao Islands
We’ll enjoy an early breakfast before a one-hour shuttle transfer to Tran De Pier, where we board the 7:45 AM speedboat to Con Dao Island. Arriving at Ben Dam Pier at approximately 10:20 AM, you can either arrange a taxi to your hotel or meet your pre-arranged hotel transfer.
The rest of the stay is at your leisure. Relax on Con Dao’s pristine sandy beaches, explore the island’s natural beauty and historical sites at your own pace, and enjoy free time as you wish. After your island stay, you will make your own arrangements for the flight back to Ho Chi Minh City.
We were keen to spend a few days in HCMC before a few more in Con Dao. Vietnam Backroads provided the perfect way to bridge the time and distance in between. We did a four-day cycling tour from HCMC to Soc Trang. Mr Cong and Van the Man were the perfect guides, providing a well-planned trip, insightful commentary, thorough service and great care – “BRIDGE! LOW GEAR! LOW GEAR!” A Mekong Delta local, Mr Cong provided wonderful insights into the country. The ultimate organiser, Mr Van charted the perfect course and helped us to renegotiate our travel plans when our ferry trip to Con Dao was cancelled due to bad weather – even letting us hitch a ride with them back to HCMC. As we were a small group, the program was very flexible and relaxed. A constant highlight was the extraordinary food that would be prepared for us in the small villages we’d pass through – often with no warning of our arrival. The bikes were modern and well set up and maintained. Our driver Mr Nghia was never far away with an endless supply of chilled water, refresher towels and his welcoming air-conditioned van! We certainly had a great time travelling and exploring another side of Vietnam with Vietnam Backroads, and recommend them to anyone keen to experience the country at the perfect pace and perspective of a bicycle. 17 - 18 - 19 - 20 Dec, 2017
The guide and driver were excellent and very service minded. They were very good to be flexible. The hotels and food were not that impressive. It would have been nice with a map. 13 - 14 - 15 - 16 Feb 2019
