The usual ways to travel to Con Dao Island are by plane or boat. Travelers often take speedboats from Vung Tau or the Mekong Delta, then return to the mainland by plane after a couple of days or a week. However, this can feel a bit dull without other adventures before or after.
Vietnam Backroads highly recommends traveling to this island through the Mekong Delta by bicycle. This authentic region offers excellent cycling routes, beautiful scenery, and unique Khmer communities in Soc Trang Province. From Tran De Dock in Soc Trang, it takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes by boat to reach Con Dao Island. Tour ends.

Day
1:
HCM - My Tho - Ben Tre - Vung Liem
25 - 45 km
Depart from the hotel at 8:00 am. Relax and watch the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City as you travel through the city. Your guide will brief you on road rules and what to expect during the day’s ride.
Arrive on the outskirts of Tan An around 9:00 am, where you will begin cycling along scenic paths. Enjoy picturesque hamlets, pass by local primary schools, and visit a family who make hats and fruit bags from grass.
Continue riding toward My Tho, passing vast vegetable farmlands with irrigation systems. Stop for lunch in My Tho city. Afterward, rest in the vehicle for 30 minutes before transferring to Ham Luong Bridge to explore the “land of coconut trees.”
The countryside of Mo Cay is one of the most beautiful rural districts for cycling. The routes follow smooth concrete paths that crisscross through villages filled with lush green water palms. Along the way, cross small rivers by ferry and ride over narrow suspension bridges designed for bicycles and motorbikes.
In the afternoon, the ride continues along shady, narrow country lanes through villages hidden among water palms and lush waterways. Take small ferry crossings and visit local families running small businesses. There will be plenty of time to pause along the country roads and experience authentic local life.
Finally, hop on the support vehicle at the Co Chien River for a 30-minute transfer to your homestay.

Day
2:
Vung Liem- Tra Vinh- Can Tho
25 - 65 km
Most daily life activities of locals take place early in the morning. It’s the best time to experience and observe local life in the surrounding areas: children head to school, the elderly bring farm products to the markets by moped, and sampan boats travel up and down the rivers. Then, return to the homestay for breakfast.
We start riding from the homestay, cycling through lush vegetable farmlands along gravel paths, and stop at small home businesses before crossing rice paddy fields on open, smooth paths. We pass Khmer pagodas, take in the stunning rural landscape, and ride along river trails beside creeks to Huu Thanh. There will be many stops along the country roads to visit fruit orchards and vegetable farms, offering endless photo opportunities.
We break for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing our ride to Tra On. Take a public ferry to cross the river to Luc Si Island, observe farmers’ daily life on the island, taste seasonal fruits at local orchards, and then take another ferry back to the mainland. From there, we ride along trails beside the Mekong River and the Can Tho suspension bridge before hopping on the van for a short transfer to Can Tho City.

3:
Can Tho- Phung Hiep- Soc Trang
25 - 65 km
The famous Cai Rang floating market is in action from 6:30 to 8:30 am every day. Locals bring their farm products to the market by boat, where both sellers and buyers can trade and make good profits.
After an early breakfast at the hotel, we check out and take a boat ride to visit the floating market. We then leave the boat behind and begin a morning ride to Phung Hiep, with an optional transfer available to avoid the heat.
This area offers lovely countryside for cycling, so we take it easy—riding at a relaxed pace and stopping along the way for photos. There are more Khmer people living here than Vietnamese and Chinese. Cycling through the area, you can observe how locals use waterways as their main means of transport.
The afternoon bike routes are especially beautiful, featuring smooth concrete paths and winding single tracks through tiny villages and lakes, offering plenty of peaceful moments to enjoy on your own. We also cycle across green farmland and stop at colorful Khmer temples before taking a break to visit Bat Pagoda.
